Book Review- The Three Billy Goats Gruff
Updated: Sep 17
Retold by Mac Barnett
Illustrated by Jon Klassen
Who doesn't love a good old folklore and this is a story which has been told numerous times. This one is no different. The story remains the same, but if you want to take a story and make it a masterpiece, give it to Mac barnett and Jon Klassen.
This author illustrator duo have all our heart and are a stock favorite in our house.
The troll here is one hungry guy. He hasn't had a morsel to eat in forever and is very hungry. The Clip Clop of hooves makes him jump with joy but in the hope of having a bigger meal aka bigger goat he passes on his chance at a meal. How it ends, we all know.
But let's talk about the writing. The clever use of language, the onomatopoeia, and the rhymes are all wonderful. I didn't know there could be that many ways of cooking goat. And the silliness of the song had us rofl.
The illustrations are just splendid. The color palette, the clever little details and the sheer silly size of the last goat had us in the splits. We are never going to be looking at goats the same way again!
We felt so sorry for the troll that we ended up rooting for him and therein lies the brilliance of the writing.
Ideal for ages 4+ years.
