Book Review- The Invisible Boy
By Trudy Ludwig
Illustrated by Patrice Barton
A book which talks about kindness, inclusion and acceptance. Little kids finding their place in the world and being accepted for who they are is so important. But it’s not an ideal world. And teaching our children all POV’s is essential.
Brian is invisible in class. The teacher is engaged with the other kids who make noise, take up space - basically the kids who make themselves heard.
Brian is quiet, silent and almost invisible. He keeps himself occupied in his world of art. But the loneliness and exclusion becomes hard for him at lunch and recess, where he is left out.
When a new kid joins his class, and is made fun of by his class mates, Brian tries to be kind in his own way. Does it work? Will Brian make a friend and finally feel accepted?
An essential read for kids finding it hard to settle. A must read for teachers, to know that every kid needs to be seen and heard.
We liked that the kids who exclude don’t do it intentionally, they just don’t know better. There was no ugly bullying or being nasty.
The illustrations are brilliant. The progression of the representation of Brian from B/W to colour was beautifully done.
Ideal for kids aged 3.5yrs +
