Book Review- Starbird

By Sharon King-Chai

The fabled Starbird whose songs wove the most magical dreams is much coveted by all. When the Moon King realizes that he is soon to be a father, he vows to give his daughter the best gift and nothing less than the Starbird would do. He captures the Starbird and holds him prisoner in the palace.

But the sadness of the Starbird is noticed by the little princess who frees him. Overjoyed with his freedom and a desire to find his true home, Starbird travels across jungles, oceans, hills, valleys and desert but alas he is captured again.

But this time, Starbird loses all hope in captivity and stops singing altogether. A delicate story of love, hope and above all freedom. There is love of a father for his daughter which pushes him into an inhumane act. Love of a child for her dear bird which recognises the melancholy in his song. The love of a bird for his own freedom and home. And hope that one day he will find his true destination.

Finally, it is love that’s the final redemption and a humble reminder that though our children may be young, they do have their hearts in the right place, something which we seem to have lost in our own mundanity. As parents, it is a reminder that though you want to give the world to your child, maybe your child is happier being your world?!

Illustrations which will enthrall the reader, keep you guessing, keep you hooked and in touch with every feeling. The negative space is used in a stunning manner and the visual detailing is truly magical.

We keep coming back to this one time and again. Definitely recommend. Ideal for kids aged 2.5+ yrs
