This book found its way to us during a time when I was navigating a loss under similar circumstances, making it a deeply moving and poignant read. The story follows Aadya, whose Aai has gone to the hospital because doctors found something growing in her chest that needed to be removed. Aadya eagerly awaits her mother’s return, filled with stories to share and a longing for her.
However, when Aai comes home, Aadya’s joy is tinged with unease. Why does Aai look and smell different? Aadya, who sees herself as a reflection of her mother, struggles to understand this change. She has always been the “mini” version of her mom, but now that her mother has changed, Aadya is left questioning her own identity.
This is a sensitive exploration of self-identity, beauty, and appearances, as well as the impact of cancer and the emotional toll it takes on a family. The story is a testament to the strength of familial bonds rooted in love and empathy.
The illustrations beautifully capture the unspoken words and silences between mother and daughter, adding depth to the narrative. This is a moving and beautifully told story that resonates deeply.
Ideal for children aged 4 and up.
