Enter the milkman, with his daily delivery of milk packets—a discovery that leads the clever feline to a reliable meal each day. But when milk packets start disappearing, the residents are far from pleased.

At the center of it all is Amooma, the wise and empathetic matriarch who understands both sides—the frustration of the residents and the cat’s sheer will to survive. How she finds a way to create harmony between humans and animals forms the heart of this beautiful tale about coexistence.

One of the finest books we’ve read in a long time—deceptively simple yet richly evocative—Machher Jhol is nothing short of a masterpiece. At its heart is Gopu, a determined young boy who sets out alone, convinced that his ailing father needs his favorite fish curry to recover.

Undeterred, he navigates the bustling lanes of Calcutta, seemingly during Pujo, in search of the freshest ingredients. His journey leads him from the bustling market to his grandmother’s house, where he hopes to create the perfect dish. Initially, details like Gopu counting his steps may seem incidental, but as the story unfolds, they come together in a brilliantly unexpected way. In hindsight, what seemed trivial transforms into a moment of nail-biting suspense—leaving us marveling at how easily things could have gone awry.

While the story itself is beautifully simple, the book’s true magic lies in its illustrations. Sumanta Dey turns every page into a cinematic spectacle—not in a way that diminishes the power of books, but in a way that rivals the immersive grandeur of film. His artwork is anything but simple; it is intricate, evocative, and a pure joy to behold. More than just illustrations, they are a love letter to Calcutta, making us yearn for more from this incredibly talented artist—a loss that feels almost personal.

🍀 Location Emphasis: Each habitat is tied to a specific location, which might give the impression that the featured flora and fauna are exclusive to that region, potentially limiting a broader understanding of biodiversity.

All in all, Habitats of the World is a stunning visual and educational resource. If your child—or you—are curious about nature and ecosystems, this is a must-have addition to your bookshelf!

How did I get here?

The book effectively introduces children to the basics of evolution, answering the “how,” “where,” “when,” and “why” of our origins. However, certain aspects, particularly the transition from single-celled organisms to humans, feel oversimplified. This could inadvertently lead to the misconception of evolution as a straightforward, linear process, which we know is not the case. Additionally, the presentation of scientific hypotheses as indisputable facts might be misleading for young readers. While the content is well-supported, leaving room for evolving scientific understanding would have been a better approach.

The language is kid-friendly, with a touch of humor to keep things light and entertaining, though some of the humor might go over younger children’s heads. The illustrations are vibrant and engaging, enhancing the overall appeal for early readers.

For those looking for a more detailed and nuanced exploration of evolution, I’d recommend The Story of Life by Catherine Barr and Steve Williams, which provides a more thorough and accurate take on the subject.

That said, How Did I Get Here? is a charming, beginner-friendly book, perfect for children aged 4 and up. It’s a fun introduction to evolution, brimming with humor, and ideal for sparking curiosity in little learners.

Having loved The Miracle on Kachua Beach, we were eager to read The Miracle on Sunderbaag Street, especially given the glowing reviews it has received—and it did not disappoint. This beautifully crafted story sensitively addresses themes of loss and healing, while highlighting the profound connection between nature and human resilience.

The story follows Zara, a young girl grappling with deep loss that has left her withdrawn. Her favorite retreat is a neglected, decrepit dumpyard—an unlikely sanctuary frequented by no one except a group of boys practicing their not-so-melodious tunes and her old craft teacher, Miss Gappi. Known for her endless chatter, Miss Gappi initially irritates Zara, who prefers solitude. However, Zara’s curiosity is piqued by Miss Gappi’s activities and her captivating stories.

Interwoven into the narrative is the dumpyard’s history—once a vibrant, flourishing garden beloved by the community. Inspired by this tale and Miss Gappi’s gentle guidance, Zara finds a renewed sense of purpose. Leaf by Sandra Dieckmann

A polar bear unexpectedly arrives on an island, and the local animals, unsure of what to make of him, react with fear and suspicion. The bear’s odd behavior, like covering himself with leaves and leaping off cliffs, only adds to their unease.

Yet, among the animals, the crows urge everyone to come together and communicate with the bear rather than shun him. When the bear nearly drowns after one of his reckless leaps, the crows come to his rescue, and his heartbreaking story unfolds—a tale of loss, struggle, and the devastating impact of climate change on his kind.

Leaf is a poignant exploration of the challenges faced by polar bears—emblematic of the broader environmental crisis. It highlights the shrinking ice caps, disappearing habitats, and the dire consequences for wildlife. While the book raises awareness about climate change, it also delivers an important message about acceptance and inclusion, reminding young readers of the power of compassion and understanding.

Even if none of the above themes work for you, the artwork alone makes this book worth owning. Sandra Dieckmann’s illustrations are exquisite, each page a delicate work of art that could easily be framed and displayed. It is lovely and tragic.

Lunch Friends

Lunch Friends is one such book that takes me back to fond memories of my grandmother’s house, where summers were spent in the backyard, surrounded by birds, insects, and small animals. These creatures were cherished members of the household, not just mere animals, and were cared for like family.

In this charming story, Mihir is visiting his grandmother and notices that she leaves food out every day for the birds and squirrels that gather by the kitchen window. They live in a nearby mango tree and come to visit her daily. However, when the tree is unexpectedly cut down and the animals stop coming, Mihir comes up with a plan to bring them back.

Lunch Friends beautifully explores themes of intergenerational relationships, the love for nature, and the simple joy of sharing food. The bond between Mihir and his grandmother is heartwarming, and the story emphasizes how food can bring people—and creatures—together.

This is a delightful book for children aged 3 and up, perfect for sparking conversations about kindness, family, and the natural world.

Ganesha’s Sweet Tooth

Indian mythology can be a tricky topic to dive into with kids—it’s often full of heavy themes, unbelievable stories, over-the-top characters, and more drama than a primetime TV show. Add in the occasional dose of epic violence, and it’s not exactly your go-to bedtime material. That’s why Ganesha’s Sweet Tooth was such a refreshing delight!

Here, Ganesha isn’t a larger-than-life god—he’s just a candy-loving kid with an insatiable sweet tooth. Together with his loyal and hilarious buddy, Mr. Mouse, Ganesha is on a sugary rampage until he encounters the Super Jumbo Jawbreaker Laddoo. Naturally, this laddoo turns out to be his match, breaking Ganesha’s tusk in the process.

In classic tantrum style, Ganesha flings the tusk in frustration—only for it to land on Vyasa, who, with some quick thinking, transforms the situation into the start of a legendary partnership. Cue the creation of the Mahabharata!

We all know the story of Ganesha scribing the Mahabharata, but this retelling brings it to life with humor and creativity. It’s age-appropriate, clever, and even sneaks in some SEL lessons. From Ganesha’s temper tantrum to his eventual “turn lemons into lemonade” moment, there’s a subtle message about adapting to life’s curveballs.

The illustrations are a visual treat—think bold, modern colors and graphics that feel straight out of a futuristic video game. This playful reimagining of Ganesha and his ever-patient “manager,” Mr. Mouse, had us hooked.

Perfect for kids aged 4+ and their grown-ups who love a fresh twist on old classics.

Separate is Never Equal

Separate is Never Equal addresses the discrimination faced by Mexican-American children in California’s school admissions. The story follows Sylvia and her family as they move to Westminster, California, where Sylvia eagerly anticipates attending a larger school.

However, she and her siblings are denied admission, directed instead to a “Mexican school” with inferior facilities, initiating their family’s fight to end segregation in education.

The book presents moments of stark injustice, and brought shock and disappointment to my child who for the first time had to confront the reality of such inequality. It also prompts reflection on the privileges and opportunities we may often take for granted.

The illustrations, rendered in a folk-art style, are rich and evocative, enhancing the narrative’s emotional depth. The author’s note is detailed and insightful, providing valuable historical context.

This book is well-suited for children aged 6 and up, encouraging both awareness and empathy.

Cafe at the Edge of the Woods

With playful interactive elements, catchy rhymes, and the most charming illustrations, this is exactly how I love my mythology—modern, fun, and perfect for young minds!

It’s the ideal first step into the epic world of Rama, Sita, and their thrilling adventure, and a wonderful way to introduce little ones to the festival of Diwali.

The Skull

In The Skull, Otilla is on the run, though from what, we don’t quite know. Seeking refuge, she stumbles upon an empty house that seems deserted—until she meets its sole inhabitant: a talking skull. What follows is a strange, surreal cohabitation, where Otilla and the skull share quiet moments of domesticity—eating pears, drinking tea, and even waltzing in matching masks. But beneath this eerie calm lies a darker truth.

The skull reveals his secret: every night, he is pursued by a terrifying, headless skeleton, and he is utterly petrified. Otilla, having an advantage (with her limbs intact), decides to take matters into her own hands. What unfolds next is a macabre and strangely spooky sequence, where Otilla’s cold precision in dealing with the threat is both unsettling and impressive.

Their friendship, born out of mutual fear and the need to face their demons, becomes the strongest bond either of them has known. In the author’s note, Klassen explains how the story, inspired by a Tyrolean folktale, morphed into something uniquely his own. And that’s the beauty of folktales—each storyteller brings them to life in new ways, with each retelling adding a fresh flavor.

The story, while dark and eerie, ends on a surprisingly sweet note. Against all odds, you find yourself rooting for the skull—a strange sentiment for such a bizarre character, but Klassen makes it work beautifully.

As always, Klassen’s illustrations are a delight. The muted, monochromatic palette contrasts with the rich detailing, allowing the art to do much of the storytelling. And don’t skip the author’s note—it’s the highlight of the book, offering insight into the inspiration behind this hauntingly charming tale. #halloween

The girl who could not stop laughing

T. Sundari from class 4-B has an unusual problem—she laughs uncontrollably. And she laughs a lot! Her untimely giggles often land her in trouble, but no matter how hard she tries, Sundari can’t seem to control it. The problem? Just about anything can set her off—even a simple word like “bonda.”

Determined to find a solution, Sundari takes a methodical approach, creating lists of her triggers, but nothing seems to work. As a last resort, she turns to her older brother, Skandu anna, a scientist, to see if he can help her stop her fits of laughter. Will he be able to fix Sundari’s problem?

This delightful book will have you laughing right alongside Sundari as she navigates the challenges of her uncontrollable laughter. Beyond the humor, the story touches on deeper themes, like the subtle pressure of traditional gender roles. Girls are often told to laugh less, speak less, and not draw too much attention to themselves. I grew up accepting these norms, even when they didn’t feel quite right.

One powerful message from the book is that “So long as you’re not hurting anyone’s feelings, there’s nothing wrong with a good laugh.” It reminds us that children shouldn’t be dimmed by societal expectations—they should be allowed to simply enjoy being themselves. Sundari’s journey helps her realize there’s nothing wrong with her; in fact, her laughter is a gift that brings joy to her and others.

The illustrations by Rosh perfectly capture T. Sundari’s many moods and infectious laughter, making her all the more lovable.

Book Review: The Myth of the Wild Gaur

The Myth of the Wild Gaur addresses a critical issue— the delicate balance between nature and human activity, particularly in the context of the endangered wild gaur in the Nilgiris. As development continues to encroach upon natural ecosystems, species like the wild gaur are increasingly at risk of losing their habitats. The book places this environmental concern at the heart of a compelling narrative, led by the determined young protagonist, Theni.

Set in the Megham mountain of the Nilgiris, Theni, the daughter of the chief honey collector, belongs to a tribe that champions sustainability and respects the intricate balance of nature. Her community believes in a fragile, invisible web that connects all living things, warning that disruption could lead to catastrophic consequences.

The story begins when Theni’s class is discussing the wild gaur. Surprisingly, none of the children, including Theni herself—despite living in the forest—have ever seen the animal up close. Curious, Theni ventures to a lake where wild gaurs are known to drink, only to discover the lake has been reduced to a trickle. Upon investigation, she finds pipes diverting the water, threatening the ecosystem.

What follows is an inspiring tale of how Theni and her friends confront corporate greed in their fight to restore the natural balance. We adored the whimsical spirit and theatrical quality of this tale. The monochromatic illustrations, punctuated by a single splash of color from the fallen object, are both stunning and magical. The animals, with their dapper top hats, and the lush gardens filled with flowers and dandelions, make every page a feast for the eyes. The spider’s clever scheming and his eventual reckoning add depth to this enchanting story.

Writing science for kids can be a tricky business—how do you take all these big, brain-busting ideas and make them click for a child? Well, Anushka Ravishankar has absolutely nailed it in the Smartypants series.

So, who exactly is Smartypants? Oh, just the coolest cat in town! He’s cheeky, confident, and always ready with a quick quip. Early in the book, we gently become aware of Tsering’s visual impairment, but the authors skillfully ensure that it is never a barrier to his participation in daily life. Tsering moves through his day with ease, and along the way, he invites neighbors and friends to join him for a special dinner—his grandmother’s delicious, spicy Thukpa.

While the book touches on the challenges of living in a rugged, remote area, it is the warmth and generosity of Tsering’s friends and well-wishers that stand out. Each guest brings something to enhance the shared meal, adding to its richness.

Life in the mountains, though beautiful, comes with its own difficulties, and this is highlighted when a power outage occurs just as Abi-le is cooking. In this quiet, powerful moment, the story reaches its emotional peak, offering a deeper understanding of how Tsering experiences the world. For him, whether in light or darkness, his reality remains the same, and he steps in to help his grandmother finish preparing the meal.

The attention to detail throughout the story makes it a truly exquisite read. The illustrations, while rustic, provide an authentic representation of the region. What stands out most is the thoughtful sensitivity with which the entire book is crafted.

At first glance, Karukku Norukku is a delightful story filled with lighthearted moments. The protagonist, Guru, loves murukkus and has but one wish: to enjoy them in peace without the obligation to share. He devises a clever plan to hide a packet of murukkus in his bag, avoiding the need to share them with others. However, as the story unfolds, Guru’s plan is continuously thwarted, and despite his efforts, he is unable to eat even one murukku.

The story concludes with a seemingly fortunate turn of events as Janmashtami arrives, a day when fried snacks like murukkus are plentiful, and all is well. On the surface, it feels like a happy ending.

But let’s look at some plot points if I may.

Firstly, the central theme of the book revolves around Guru’s reluctance to share. The narrative implies that because of Guru’s unwillingness to share, he has to go into a lot of trouble to eat even one murukku. This moral feels heavy-handed and counterproductive. Teaching children to share should stem from fostering an understanding of the joy it brings, not through unnecessarily punitive consequences.

Secondly, the use of language in the book is problematic. The attempt to incorporate colloquial phrases—presumably to reflect South Indian speech—comes off as an exaggerated stereotype. The notion that “We all South Indians/Indians in general speak like this only no?!” is both inaccurate and reductive. Mainstreaming these phrases diminishes the potential for authentic representation and perpetuates unwarranted caricatures of regional speech.

The redeeming aspect of Karukku Norukku lies in its illustrations. Vibha Surya’s art is creative and detailed, bringing a quirky charm to the book that elevates its visual appeal. The artwork is indeed splendid and adds an engaging layer to the story, making it visually stimulating for young readers.

In today’s world, where uncertainty prevails, we all seek ways to educate and protect our children, but often struggle with where to begin. Shaan and the Thief of Smiles addresses an important yet sensitive issue: child grooming. Child predators frequently test a child’s boundaries to gauge how they might react to abuse, and one of their common tactics is asking a child to keep a secret.

While we may view secret-keeping as harmless, it is crucial to understand that there are no “good” or “bad” secrets, as the author’s note thoughtfully explains. Any secret that a child is asked to keep should be discussed with a trusted individual within the child’s safety circle.

This book does an great job of simplifying this critical concept for young readers. By using the metaphor of “someone stealing a child’s smiles,” the author effectively communicates this lesson in a way younger children can understand. For older children, parents can leverage the story to foster more in-depth discussions on the topic.

The author’s note at the end of the book is particularly valuable, offering practical tips and strategies to help parents first educate themselves, and then approach this sensitive subject with their children.

Suitable for children aged 3 and above, this book serves as a helpful starting point for parents to initiate important conversations about safety and boundaries.

This picture book is a brilliant blend of humor, mischief, and heart. With minimal text, the illustrations take center stage, bringing the lively story to life in the most vibrant way. The dynamic drawings perfectly capture the chaos and charm of the day, with drama and humor bursting from every page.

What’s also refreshing is how the book playfully steps away from traditional gender roles. Amma’s fixing the light bulb while Appa is showing off his skills in the kitchen—and their characters are drawn so cleverly to reflect this.

There’s a nice touch of vocabulary building for little ones woven into the story too, but the real magic is in how wonderfully simple, relatable, and warm this tale feels. It’s the kind of story that leaves you smiling.
